In short
Most problems in a factory move come from late planning: no floor plan for the new building, power not ready, technicians not booked, and trying to move everything at once. A phased plan and one owner prevent most of the damage.
The mistakes
- Starting to plan a month ahead; a factory needs two to three months.
- No floor plan for the new building, so machine positions are decided while unloading.
- Power and compressed air not ready when machines arrive.
- Technicians booked at the last minute and arriving late.
- Moving the whole factory at once instead of in phases.
- Not selling or disposing of old equipment first, and paying to move it.
- No single owner on site to make decisions.
Doing it right
Start with a survey, build a floor plan, book electricians and technicians with dates, and move in phases: warehouse and offices first, the main machines last. One project manager on the mover's side and one owner on the factory's side.
