How to pack an apartment for a move: tips from the field

How to pack an apartment properly: the right box sizes, packing by room, dishes and fragile items, books, clothes and what not to put in boxes.

In short

Small boxes for heavy things and large boxes for light things, pack by room with labels on the side, pad dishes and fragile items well, and keep a separate bag for the essentials. Start with the rooms you use least.

The basics

  • Books and dishes in small boxes so they can be lifted.
  • Bedding and clothes in large boxes.
  • Room and general contents written on the side, not just the top.
  • Do not overfill a box above its height.

Fragile items

Pack plates standing on edge, like records, with paper between them. Wrap glasses one by one. Mark the box 'fragile' with an arrow pointing up. A TV is best in its original packaging or the wrap the movers bring.

What not to put in boxes

  • Documents, jewellery and cash: keep them with you.
  • Flammable materials and gas cylinders.
  • Medicines and chargers you will need on day one.
